Married couples are asked to make an unconditional promise on their wedding day. Mothers and fathers love their children unconditionally. Why is it that parents love this way? How is it that spouses can love this way? It's only possible because the one who created us loves like this. In "all things", through the good, the bad, and the ugly. Through the messiness of life. "All things work for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Today's first reading from the Book of Wisdom reveals something that is a subtle theme throughout the Scriptures. While He could demonstrate His power through use of force and might, God manifests His power in the opposite way: by showing mercy, by forgiving, by tender love. The place that we see this most poignantly is in the person and life of Jesus.

Jesus makes it clear in today's Gospel that God is asking for our first allegiance -- that we put him first, even before our parents, our spouse, our children. What we might forget is that putting God first IS putting our children and spouse first. What is God's will for me is also God's will for my children and spouse. What is good for me is also good for my children and spouse. This should give us courage to make the sacrifices that we need to make for God -- including when we face opposition from our children and spouse.

This past Friday the Church celebrated the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today we meditate on what we learn from this special devotion and image in our Church's tradition and, in particular, how Jesus shows us and offers us His Heart. This becomes the model of what we must do too: to show and offer our heart!

5-7-17: 4th Sunday of Easter: What Does the Voice of Jesus Sound Like?
Monday May 08, 2017
Monday May 08, 2017
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday, and the Church gives us readings every year on the 4th Sunday of Easter that remind us that Jesus is our Good Shepherd and we are his sheep. Jesus says in today's Gospel:
"the sheep hear the shepherd's voice,as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own,he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice."
Jesus is calling us by name -- each one of his. Do we hear him? Do we recognize him? Do we respond?

4/30/17: 3rd Sunday of Easter: Not Enough for Jesus to Be with Us

In today's Gospel we have the famous story of the two disciples who are leaving Jerusalem for Emmaus following the death of Jesus. Jesus comes to walk with them, and they soon find themselves enraptured by what was probably the greatest Bible study ever conducted in history. Yet the Scriptures alone were not enough for them to recognize Jesus. It was not until He celebrated the Eucharist for them that they recognized Him. It was not enough for Him to stay with them... He wanted to be in them... achieving union with them, dwelling in their heart through their partaking of the Eucharist.

According to the world's (and our own) standards, Jesus should have written off his apostles after they denied him at the end of his life. Instead of anger or disappointment, however, Jesus answers their betrayal with the words, "Peace be with you." He doesn't appear to them to show his anger or disappointment. He appears to them to show mercy.

As I grow in my Christian life I realize more and more two things: That I can't. And that God can. Ultimately, this is the message of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
