8/24/14: 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time: A Church Entrusted to Weak Men

In today's Gospel Jesus entrusts the Church to Peter, a weak and sinful man. When we put our trust in the Church we are not putting our trust in man but in Jesus who promised that the Holy Spirit would protect the Church from error.

8/17/14: 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Silence of God

In this Sunday's Gospel, a pagan woman approaches Jesus and perseveres through his silence and his apparent rebuffs--so too must we, so that we can hear Him say to us: "Great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish!"

In this Sunday's readings, we learn that God is different than the powerful forces of the world. He is not only different from these but more powerful than them. He rules over these. By learning to hear and hang on to God we too can experience peace and calm amidst the storm.

The images used for the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures are universal, showing us the everybody--whether they know it or not--needs the Holy Spirit in order to have life. It's our responsibility--yours and mine--to bring them to this Life-Giving Water.
